Is It A Happy New Year?

The start of a new year is often celebrated as a time for fresh beginnings and renewed hope. For some, it’s a chance to leave the past behind and embrace new opportunities. For others, the prospect of another 365 days can feel overwhelming, especially if last year was difficult or if life’s challenges seem all consuming.

Not everyone feels excited about setting new goals or resolutions. Financial pressures, personal losses, or simply the weight of daily life can make the new year feel more like a mountain to climb than a blank canvas. If you’re finding it hard to look forward, remember: you’re not alone. These are common symptoms at this time of year.

Gentle Steps Forward

You don’t need grand ambitions or elaborate resolutions to make progress. Sometimes, just getting out of bed and taking a shower is an achievement worth celebrating. Perhaps your next step is a walk outside, or simply recognising how you feel in this moment. Being aware of our emotions and noticing negative thought spirals is the first step towards improving wellbeing.

Understanding Your Feelings

Feelings of depression, anxiety, dread, guilt, or shame often arise not because of something you’ve done, but due to unhelpful thought patterns and self-criticism. These emotions can be persistent and difficult to manage alone.

Getting Some Positive Input

It’s important to consider what you focus on. Negative thought patterns and self-criticism can have a detrimental impact on your wellbeing, often making it difficult to move forward. Trying to block out negative thoughts can be challenging, but sometimes it’s more effective to gently shift your attention towards something positive instead. For example, you might find it helpful to watch uplifting TED Talks or explore books on psychology and wellbeing. By choosing to focus on positive and constructive resources, you can begin to break the cycle of negativity and support your own emotional health.

How Counselling Can Help

If you’re struggling with your emotions or mental health and nothing else seems to be helping, counselling can offer support. It provides a confidential, non-judgemental space to improve self-awareness and develop practical coping strategies for life’s challenges and transitions. Addressing the root causes of distress can empower you to build resilience, improve relationships, and enhance your overall quality of life.

Sometimes, just changing negative thinking patterns can make a huge difference to how you feel and how you manage your emotions. You deserve kindness and support, whatever your goals for the new year may be.
